Osamah is the first to arrive in Australia via this new visa pathway. His long 'limbo' is over

Osamah is the first to arrive in Australia via a new visa pathway designed for refugees aged 18-30, providing a permanent visa for those chosen to take part.

This program allows refugees to pursue qualifications in fields like nursing, civil engineering, technology, business, or economics. It is currently a pilot program with 20 participants in 2026.

Osamah and his family fled Yemen in 2017 due to war, living in Malaysia without refugee rights. Now, he is in Australia to study Biotechnology at the University of Melbourne.

The Refugee Student Settlement Pathway (RSSP) offers Special Humanitarian Visas, enabling permanent settlement in Australia. This initiative empowers universities to play an active role in refugee settlement.

Future intakes will be considered annually by the government to determine if the program could become permanent.
